Maupin Novel Adapted for Stage Musical

Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City is slated to head to the Great White Way, Variety reported Friday. Avenue Q book writer Jeff Whitty and Scissor Sisters bandmates Jason Sellards and John Garden are penning the musical, due to hit the stage during the 2009–2010 season. The story follows Maupin’s quirky characters as encountered by a young Midwestern woman in 1970s San Francisco.

While the budget for the proposed show has not yet been determined, producers Jeffery Seller, Robyn Goodman, and Kevin McCullum said they expect the musical to be a large-scale production. Seller estimated the capital would be no less than $10 million.

The musical will mostly include stories from the original 1978 Tales of the City book, the first of seven in the series, according to the article. Tales has been adapted for television in three miniseries that aired on PBS and Showtime. (The Advocate)
